THE OLD WINERY

The Old Winery is a four bedroom holiday home (with the additional option of a one bedroom cottage) situated next to the world class wine estate of Constantia Uitsig. Formerly a winery, this historical building has been restored to provide a very comfortable home with an abundance of character.

Surrounded by a wonderful one-acre garden of gentle rolling lawns, riotous flower beds and large shady trees, the house offers a fabulous amount of space, ideal for families with children.

A single storey dwelling, The Old Winery has a very light and spacious double-height living room with dining area, a separate television room and a fully equipped kitchen as well as (my personal favourite) a pool-side room with a built-in barbeque - delightful for dining al fresco at any time of day. The master bedroom is on one side of the home, and has a dressing area and en-suite bathroom. On the other side of the house is a second double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and two further small bedrooms which share a bathroom, one with twin beds and the other with a double bed.

An optional guest cottage provides a fifth bedroom and living room. This cottage is not rented out to other guests during bookings so privacy is never compromised, but it can be included in a booking, upon request, if five bedrooms are needed.

Within a stone’s throw of The Old Winery lie the wine farms of Constantia Uitsig, Buitenverwachting and Klein Constantia. There are also excellent restaurants in the vicinity and beautiful beaches within a 15 minute drive. The elegant shopping mall of Constantia Village is just a 5 minute drive away.

Fully serviced every weekday by housekeepers Victor and Happiness, the Old Winery is an enchanting and relaxing retreat for any group at any time of year.

Surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Constantia Wine Valley, this lovely Villa is a haven of tranquillity complete with its own tennis court, gazebo and oval pool. Steenberg Golf Course is near by as well as the upmarket shops of Constantia Village.

The main house has a lovely formal lounge that leads into a relaxing outdoor sitting area with views onto the garden and pool. The dining room, family room and 2 of the bedrooms open onto the sunny terrace. The master bedroom is en suite and an adjacent full bathroom serves the other bedrooms.

The guest suite attached to the house is ideal for 2 couples or teenagers. Both bedrooms are en suite with mountain views and they share the lounge/kitchenette area that opens onto a wooden deck.

THE OLD FARMHOUSE

Set back from the road and bordered by a lush garden and a flowing river, this is one of those secret houses which could be driven past a hundred times without being noticed. One of the original grand houses of the Newlands area, this stunning property has recently been sympathetically restored and extended by its architect owner to create a spacious, elegant and instantly loveable family home.

Less than 10 minutes from the city centre, the house is also a short walk from a cluster of popular shops and restaurants known locally as Newlands Village – in turn a stone’s throw from the rugby and cricket stadia and Cavendish Square mall. It is also close to Kirstenbosch Gardens, the famous winelands of Constantia Village and is in a central position to reach all of the most popular beaches within 20 minutes.

From the pretty lane that turns off shady Newlands Avenue, the only sign of the house is an unassuming pedestrian gate in the wall. On stepping through and on to the rolling lawn, the original façade of the old house is revealed, with its shuttered windows and long, low stoep. From here, French doors lead directly into the main reception rooms all of which have wonderfully high ceilings, intriguing objets d’art, original artworks and an overwhelming aura of peace and welcome. An incredibly well-stocked kitchen and scullery offer every gadget a chef might desire as well as a fabulous cool room.

A light-filled corridor runs the length of the house, linking the old with the new. At the back, a huge family room has been created which spills out onto another large covered stoep. From there the bedroom wing is entered, offering three bedrooms downstairs and the master suite upstairs.

A cottage in the grounds offers a further double bedroom above an indoor spa-bath and sauna.

Outside, the long pool is the dominating feature of the garden, and a covered veranda runs along the length of it. A large fireplace in the middle of the veranda has a dining table to one side and sofas to the other - the ideal place to lean back with a glass of wine, soak up the sun and gaze up at the dramatic silhouette of Table Mountain.

This wonderfully chic house marries sophistication with a complete lack of pretension, and offers a haven of peace in a fantastic location.
